About the event
Kisa Gotami was a young mother whose only child died suddenly. Overwhelmed by grief, she wandered from house to house begging for medicine to bring him back. People pitied her, but no one could help. Finally, someone sent her to the Buddha.
The Buddha did not reject her pain. Instead, he gave her a task: “Bring me a handful of mustard seeds from a home where no one has ever died.” She went through the entire village, knocking on every door. Every family had known death — a parent, a sibling, a spouse, a child.
As she walked, her grief slowly shifted. She saw that death touches every household, every life. Her suffering was not a punishment, nor a personal failure — it was part of the human condition.
This realization broke open her heart. She returned to the Buddha, no longer asking for her child’s life back, but ready…
