Thursday evening we discussed Essential Spirituality over Zoom. Some interesting ideas were discussed.
Kellee referenced a book on the Danish being the happiest people on earth. Most of their happiness seemed to be in security. Their health care system, their employment guarantees, and the social net that cares for their citizens is notable. Certainly their lack of fear and concern about the uncertainties of life would remove the burden of future fear and thus open the door for happiness.
Chapter 5 on the Secret of Happiness then challenges us. Can we be happy regardless of the circumstances or can we be happy despite the circumstances? Can we be a modern-day Job of the Bible and be an exemplar of happiness? Can our friends desert us, our investments crash, our "stuff" burn in some fire and still experience happiness?
The book has a story of a man who cried because all he had was in a bag. The bag was lost and it was found. He was overcome with joy and happiness when it was found. The contents of that bag brought him both sorrow and elation, How come?
We'll continue in chapter 5 on Thursday at 6:30. I hope you'll join us!
