History of New Thought and Unity

Quimby Module

It looks like Quimby made a "deep dive" into the nature of the mind-body connection. At a time when, in the Western world, this was not understood at all, especially in Christianity. These ideas inspired spiritual healers and movements of the time, as well as the very young field of psychology and "psychosomatic medicine."

My own belief and experience is to begin any healing journey with centering and attunement, in prayer/meditation, to the spirit of god/whole holiness, within. Then, as guided and as seems appropriate, move to the thought of what the condition would be if it were healed. Often, ideas and guidance come to me about what can be done to help with the healing. I see the condition moving upward and "into the light." Remembering that "I am a beloved child of God," I feel uplifted. I believe this speeds the healing process.

I also work through my whole body, letting the energy flow to all parts, all seven chakras, and to the areas in need of healing. Where there seem to be energy blockages, I wait and give extra time and attention.

Usually healing occurs at some point, sometimes sooner and miraculously, sometimes more slowly.

I believe that engaging the mind-body connection is important for healing, and I am glad that Quimby helped people understand this. I disagree, however, that all disease is caused by "error" thinking. I think that the mind-body connection is more complex than that. The world of Nature also has its own physical laws, and we can work with them, too. The declaration that all disease is "error thought" is an overinterpretation by people who were excited by their discoveries, as often happens. I am grateful for the Unity teaching that "thoughts held in mind produce after their own kind." For me, an alignment with Spirit helps to bring about the kinds of thoughts that can help with healing.

Great post. I agree that considering all illness thinking errors is not accurate. Surely many illnesses are thinking and/or energy related but as you pointed out to consider all such disallows the presence of nature to interact with humanity.
