Unity History Class Module 1

I am thinking about my friends; about how dear they are to me. I am remembering how long I have known them each separately, and now as a couple. Watching him ride horseback at wild and woolly ranch rodeos on teams with my sons. Reading her book of cowgirl poetry, only recently published. Actually, he conducted both my sons’ weddings. Complete with prayers and bible readings, both in glorious open places. Together they are a wonderful couple – trustworthy friends, always ready with a bit of humor or available to help out in a pinch if needed. We do not believe in God in the same way. Not at all. My friends, you see, are “born again” Christians. Jesus is seldom far from their thoughts, altar calls and baptismal pools are a part of their church experience. I am … divergent, always have been so. I was raised in a traditional Christian community, but found more truth in the teachings that I found in Unity (and other traditions as well). I see God as a force within me, not as an anthropomorphic figure somewhere up in heaven. Yet we all (my friends and I) are so strengthened and supported by our respective faiths. We are all focused on the teachings of Jesus as a way of increasing the love in the world today [even though we interpret those teachings somewhat differently]. So faith and love, we share these big things in common. Funny how I spend so much of my time thinking about the ways that what I believe is different, and so little time thinking about how we are alike. There is a lesson here somewhere.

I also have a best friend who is a born again Christian. I appreciate the conversations we have had throughout the years and the questions we have for one another. It has mostly been all good, minus the one fight we had in 15 years which was centered around how she was scared for my eternal soul going to hell. The fear based belief is where I simply cannot fall in line, but the beauty, love, and care for others is there. Very loving and trustworthy woman
